The Sejnane region in the northwest part of Tunisia is known for its traditional terracotta pieces and figurines that are handcrafted by women potters. The specific methods to make these pieces out of local materials have protohistoric roots, having been passed down from each generation of women for over 3,000 years.
Preserving a traditional craft local to the region has a larger socio-economic element led by the women potters. In 2018, “the pottery skills of the women of Sejnane” were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing the important role of their work in preserving traditional pottery, fostering community around an ancestral tradition and generating income for the region.
Although the pottery’s origins are Berber, the designs and shapes have been influenced by diverse cultures over the centuries. More recently, the communities in Sejnane have adapted to the change in tastes by creating new products and collaborating with designers. Two Tunisian brands we carry, Made by Tinja and Flaÿou, work closely with these women potters from Sejnane to create elegant pieces for your home. The artisans and designers continue to express their creativity by molding the earth between their hands.
