Dear Soukra Community,
Our mission has always been about building bridges—connecting you with the extraordinary artistry of Tunisia’s talented designers while fostering understanding between cultures. Today, I’m writing about something deeply personal that ties directly into why Soukra exists.
Preserving Cultural Bridges
During my Fulbright year in Tunisia in 2005–2006, I studied ancient Roman mosaics, formed lasting connections, and developed lifelong skills that shaped my path in international work. The experience sparked my entrepreneurial spirit and strengthened my capacity for cultural understanding. Living with Tunisian roommates and embracing local traditions taught me to listen, adapt, and build meaningful relationships across cultures. These are skills that now guide my work at Soukra.
Right now, the U.S. government’s funding for Fulbright and similar exchange programs faces unprecedented cuts. This isn’t just about budgets–it’s about preserving the kinds of transformative experiences that allow recent graduates, as I once did, to discover that cultural exchange is essential for our future.
Why This Matters
Fulbright does what Soukra aspires to do: connect people across borders, replacing assumptions with real experiences. When funding for these programs is maintained, Fulbright capitalizes on opportunities to:
– Provide young professionals with the international experience and connections crucial for today’s global workforce
– Launch innovative entrepreneurs with cross-cultural skills that drive prosperity
– Acknowledge the limits of our own perspectives, fostering mutual understanding and global progress
I remain deeply grateful for the power of Fulbright to open minds and spark lifelong purpose, and for the Fulbright Association, which has compiled resources to assist #StandforFulbright efforts on behalf of Fulbright.
Our Commitment
Despite global challenges and shifting policies, we remain dedicated to showcasing Tunisia’s incredible designers, artists, and brands. Your continued support means these stories—and the understanding they foster—will endure.
That feeling of vulnerability I experienced in Tunis parallels starting a business: within challenge lies opportunity. Together, we can ensure that Soukra continues to be a bridge between cultures, especially when the world needs it most.
Thank you for being part of this journey. With gratitude,
Pauline
